The special unit "Ferrum" of the Berlin State Office of Criminal Investigation has, roughly nine months after its founding, placed more than 50 suspects in pre-trial detention and initiated over 600 investigations into firearm crime.

The special unit "Ferrum" (Latin for "iron") was set up at the Berlin State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) to tackle the growing number of offences involving live firearms. As a police spokesperson told the German Press Agency on request, the investigators have initiated more than 600 proceedings since the unit's launch. With this, the Berlin police are responding to a development that, according to official figures, is attracting attention nationwide.
