An enraged bison in Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. state of Wyoming attacked a retiree at a campsite, struck him in the hip with its horn, and hurled him several meters into the air, causing the man to suffer serious injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred during an evening walk when the elderly man was out with his grandchild. Suddenly, the bison bull charged at the visitors. The retiree attempted to seek safety between trees, but the animal struck him in the hip with its left horn and tossed him several meters into the air. A photographer documented the attack.

Sequence of the attack

The man's family confirmed that the retiree sustained serious injuries. Details about his current condition or the treating hospital were not immediately released. According to the photographer who captured the scene, the man bore no fault in his view: he and his grandchild had simply unexpectedly encountered the animal during their evening walk and — unlike in many previous cases — had not approached the bison.

Several bystanders reacted immediately and distracted the bull with loud shouts, causing the animal to retreat. First responders were then able to tend to the injured man. The photographer described the bull to the local newspaper Cowboy State Daily as unusually aggressive: the animal had previously pressured other people and "attacked everything and everyone."
