Blow against smuggling network Al-Sarawi: Raids in Saarbrücken and Munich

According to the investigators, the focus of the operation is the Saarbrücken area. Searches also took place in Munich. How high the number of those arrested is was initially not specified in more detail. There were also initially only few details on the structure of the network and the role of individual suspects.

According to the investigators, those smuggled were transported further via the Balkan route and through Serbia toward Western and Central Europe. Italy is considered the first EU country of arrival. Smugglers frequently demand high sums for the crossings and, according to the authorities' findings, use overcrowded boats, which makes the journeys across the Mediterranean particularly dangerous.

Charge of gang-related smuggling

The proceedings are being led by the Generalstaatsanwaltschaft (Federal Prosecutor General's Office). The authorities accuse the suspects of gang-related smuggling of foreigners. This involves, among other things, the charge that the transports were organized repeatedly and on a commercial basis, which constitutes a particularly serious form of smuggling.

The investigators base their case, according to their own statements, on years of investigations, telecommunications surveillance, and witness statements from those smuggled. Several search warrants were executed almost simultaneously in the two cities on Tuesday. During the operation, evidence such as mobile phones, documents, and suspected cash was also secured.

The operation is part of a broader European campaign against organized smuggling structures in the Mediterranean. In recent months alone, investigators in several countries have busted networks that used similar routes via Libya and Italy. The German authorities are in close contact with Europol and the law enforcement authorities in Italy and the countries along the Balkan route.

Embedding in the European campaign

In domestic policy terms, the raid falls in a phase in which Germany and the European Union have intensified their efforts against irregular migration and the associated smuggling crime. The federal government had most recently announced higher penalties for smugglers and faster deportations of rejected asylum seekers. According to observers, the raid is also seen as a signal to organized crime.

Human rights activists and aid organizations view the dismantling of such networks as fundamentally positive, but point out that the actual root causes of flight must be combated. They also demand that the rights of those smuggled be preserved and that they not be criminalized indiscriminately.

The Generalstaatsanwaltschaft announced that the investigations would be continued in the coming days. Further arrests and searches cannot be ruled out. As soon as the raid is completed, a detailed assessment is to be presented.
