Blue Origin Explosion: NASA Expects Two Years of Launch Pad Repair

Severe Damage to the Launch Pad

According to the US space agency NASA, the damage to the launch pad is so severe that extensive repairs are required. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told CNBC that the repairs will take at least two years. A restart from there is not conceivable for at least another two years.

Industry sources anticipate that the repairs could potentially extend into 2028. The exact duration depends on the extent of structural damage, the availability of spare parts, and the weather conditions during construction.

Consequences for the Artemis Program

The failure of New Glenn hits NASA's Artemis program at a sensitive point. The rocket was intended to play a central role in the planned lunar missions. The MK1 lunar lander, which was scheduled to land on Earth's moon later this year, will also be delayed by this failure.

NASA had been counting on having Blue Origin as a second reliable provider alongside competitor SpaceX. The incident significantly shifts the timelines for the lunar missions, and the dependence on individual providers is growing.

At present, NASA's primary alternatives include SpaceX with its Starship and Super Heavy rockets, as well as rockets from the European Space Agency (ESA). NASA's own SLS rocket is also being considered, but it is considered too expensive to be a realistic option for upcoming launches.

Possible Alternatives

Blue Origin itself plans to build a second launch pad, but its completion is still a long way off. Until it is operational, the gap in available launch capacity is likely to widen further.

In addition to the impact on lunar missions, the incident also delays the deployment of Amazon's satellite network. The 48 satellites scheduled for the next flight must wait for a later launch date until a launch pad is available again.

Blue Origin is in direct competition with SpaceX, Elon Musk's space company. SpaceX plans an IPO in the near future. The accident could further increase competitive pressure on Blue Origin, as important contracts and timelines now need to be renegotiated.
