Bochum Host Hertha for Second Division Opener at the Ruhrstadion

Even before the official kickoff, the DFL had publicly revealed several fixtures in the preceding days through a kind of scavenger hunt. As the league explained, "werden Lösungen zu den ausgewählten Spielen in Umschlägen verborgen, die an jeweils geheimen Standorten in den betroffenen Städten entdeckt werden können". With this, the DFL is continuing a format introduced the previous year that is designed to build additional anticipation for the new season.

For Hertha BSC, the opener in the Ruhr region carries a particular note. "Nun beginnt die Saison für das Team von Coach Stefan Leitl erneut im Ruhrgebiet", the DFL wrote. The previous year, the Berliners had kicked off away at eventual champions FC Schalke 04 and lost the match 1-2. The Bundesliga group pointed to these parallels: "Im vergangenen Jahr unterlagen die Berliner zum Auftakt auswärts dem späteren Meister FC Schalke 04 mit 1:2."

Hertha's Return to the Ruhr Region

Following relegation from the top flight, VfL Bochum is heading into the season with the declared goal of achieving immediate promotion back. The squad under head coach Dieter Hecking boasts experienced second-division performers and intends to use their home strength at the Ruhrstadion to collect points from the outset. The match against Hertha, one of the league's most attractive clubs, thus serves as an initial barometer of the mood.

Bochum's Mission: Promotion Back

On the Berlin side, alongside the sporting fresh start, there is above all the desire to put the negative experiences of the previous season behind them. After missed promotion campaigns in prior years and yet another unfavourable start in a Ruhr stadium, coach Stefan Leitl has set out the mission of finding consistency and defensive stability going into the new season. "Wir wollen diesmal von Anfang an da sein", Leitl had emphasised at his presentation.

The opener on 7 August at 20:30 will be broadcast by pay-TV channel Sky as well as on free-to-air TV by Sat.1. Viewers will thus be able to follow the match live without a subscription – a service the DFL has set up together with its media partners for the start of the season. Sky also offers a conference channel that brings together the key scenes from all second-division matches taking place simultaneously.

Behind the scenes, there is also the departure of André Hechelmann from the DFL executive board. A decision on his successor has not yet been made, according to supervisory board circles. The league's sporting leadership thus remains in a phase of personnel transition while match operations in both professional leagues are being prepared simultaneously.

Bayern Open the Bundesliga Against Stuttgart

Parallel to the 2. Bundesliga kickoff, the DFL has also announced the opening of the Bundesliga. Accordingly, the German champions FC Bayern München will open the 64th season of the top flight with a home match against VfB Stuttgart. "Der Deutsche Meister FC Bayern München eröffnet die 64. Saison der Fußball-Bundesliga mit einem Heimspiel gegen den VfB Stuttgart", the league announced. Kickoff is on 28 August at 20:30, also live on Sat.1 and Sky.

The match between Bayern and Stuttgart evokes particular memories: "Es kommt somit zur Wiederholung des vergangenen DFB-Pokal-Endspiels, das die Münchner mit 3:0 für sich entscheiden konnten." FCB had clearly won the cup final in May against VfB and now face the Swabian rivals again in the league opener.

Traditionally, the German champions are one of the two teams designated for the opening match. This year too, the DFL is following a long-established convention that sees the cup winner or vice-champion as the second participant. VfB Stuttgart claimed the runners-up title in the previous season and therefore lines up alongside the champions.

Elversberg Ahead of Bundesliga Premiere

The first weekend of the new season also brings the debut for the Bundesliga promoted sides. SV Elversberg, who will play in the highest German division for the first time, will face Bayer Leverkusen "bei ihrer Bundesliga-Premiere am 29. oder 30. August", according to the DFL. The newcomer from Saarland thus faces a top-calibre opponent right away.

Two Ruhr Derbies in One Season

Another season highlight is the Ruhr derbies. "Fest stand auch schon, dass Schalke und Borussia Dortmund am 12. und 29. Spieltag zum Revierderby gegeneinander antreten", the DFL further announced. The two Ruhr clubs will thus meet twice in the first half of the season and once in the second – a rarity that is sure to add extra excitement to the league.

In total, the Bundesliga fixture list comprises 34 matchdays. The first half of the season traditionally ends before the winter break in December; the second half begins in January and concludes with the 34th matchday in May 2027. Relegation play-offs and the DFB-Pokal accompany the season in parallel.

Already on Thursday evening, the DFL intends to publish the complete fixture list. Clubs will then learn which opponents they will face on the first, second and third matchdays. Until then, the opening duels are the dominant topic in fan forums, social networks and daily newspapers.

For media coverage, the start of the new season marks the beginning of an intensive reporting phase. Sky, Sat.1 and the clubs' streaming services will align their programming to the new season over the coming weeks. The DFL expects another strong TV demand, particularly since VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC are among the most attractive second-division clubs.
