Frankfurt am Main, 01 July 2026

The new 2. Bundesliga season will kick off on 7 August at 20:30 with VfL Bochum's home match against Hertha BSC at the Ruhrstadion, as the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) announced as part of the "Bundesliga City Challenge."

By making the announcement one day before the release of the full fixture list, the DFL has unveiled the first building block of the 2026/27 season. "Im Rahmen der ‚Bundesliga City Challenge', mit der nun auch das Bundesliga-Eröffnungsspiel enthüllt wurde, gab es dann Gewissheit", it said from Frankfurt. The match at the Ruhrstadion thus forms the sporting opener of a season in which a total of 18 clubs will compete for promotion to Germany's top flight.
