The bodies of four Italian divers were found in a cave system in the Maldives after a fatal diving accident that occurred during a privately organized expedition.

The victims included a 22-year-old student and a 31-year-old marine researcher, whose bodies were recovered on Tuesday by Maldivian authorities and an international team of experienced divers.

Earlier, the bodies of the student's mother, a 51-year-old marine biologist from Genoa, and another 31-year-old researcher had been retrieved from the same cave system known as 'Dhekunu Kandu.'

The divers were found in a single side passage of the cave system, which is located approximately 60 meters below the surface.

According to rescue officials, the group likely lost their orientation during the dive, which was not part of any officially sanctioned research mission.
