The four remaining gold prospectors trapped in a flooded cave in northern Laos emerged from the mountain on Saturday afternoon, bringing a dramatic ten-day underground ordeal to a partial close.
A Self-Liberation Amid Cheers
The men, who had been huddled in a narrow shaft about 300 meters from the cave entrance, walked out of the cave on their own after water levels inside dropped sufficiently, according to rescuers on the scene.
Cave diver Josh Richards, who supported the mission on site, told the German Press Agency (dpa): "They did it all by themselves – we were just pumping water and were in front of the cave."
Richards described the moment of their emergence: "I was just about to go back into the cave when they suddenly came out." The water in the cave had apparently receded enough that the gold prospectors did not need to dive.
