The bodies of four Italian divers who went missing during a cave exploration in the Maldives have been found at a depth of 60 meters, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The divers, who were exploring an underwater cave system in the Vaavu Atoll, were reported missing after failing to return from their dive. The group included a 51-year-old marine biologist from Genoa, her 22-year-old daughter, a 31-year-old researcher, and a 31-year-old diver.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) announced that the recovery of the bodies would take place over the coming days due to the challenging conditions. The operation is being conducted in collaboration with international diving experts.
DAN Europe, the organization collaborating with the rescue team, described the mission as 'technically demanding, emotionally taxing, and operationally complex.' The divers were found in a single side passage of the 'Dhekunu Kandu' cave system.
