Bonn, June 05, 2026
The Friedrich-Ebert-Bridge in Bonn, part of the A565 motorway, was fully closed by the Autobahn GmbH until further notice on Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2026, after experts identified cracks in the concrete and corrosion on the reinforcing steel of the left-Rhine approach bridge.
Background: From Truck Ban to Full Closure
According to the Autobahn GmbH, the closure was implemented because the restriction for trucks over 7.5 tons, imposed in February, was insufficient to prevent further damage to the 660-meter-long structure. Dirk Brandenburger, technical managing director of the Autobahn GmbH, told the German Press Agency: "We hope to have a comprehensive damage and situation assessment within the next two weeks, from which we can derive what will happen with the structure." Several experts are already working to assess the bridge's condition.
