Federal Transport Minister Schnieder assures Bonn of swift aid for closed North Bridge

Even before the full closure, a ban on trucks over 7.5 tonnes had been in effect. Technical monitoring systems had been installed to enforce this restriction. It has now become clear that the damage is so severe that a closure became unavoidable. Whether the structure can be rehabilitated at all is currently uncertain.

Speaking on the sidelines of the on-site appointment, Schnieder described "dramatische Auswirkungen" on the city and the entire region. "Die Bedeutung der Brücke ist enorm für Bonn und für die umliegende Region", said the CDU politician. At the same time, he emphasized that safety always has the highest priority. First, the exact extent of the damage must be clarified; then a decision will be made on what measures are necessary to make the bridge passable again as quickly as possible.

„Jetzt geht es darum, dass wir möglichst schnell diese Brücke wieder befahrbar machen", said Schnieder. The federal government, which is responsible, will quickly develop solutions together with the city, the district, and the state transport ministry. According to Schnieder, the region need not worry about financing. „Der Bund werde mit aller Kraft dafür eintreten, die Beeinträchtigungen so gering wie möglich zu halten."

Federal Government Promises Swift Aid

At the on-site appointment on Friday, a joint press conference was also held with representatives of the Autobahn GmbH, Bonn's Mayor Guido Déus (CDU), and Rhein-Sieg District Administrator Sebastian Schuster (CDU). Schnieder thanked the Autobahn GmbH for acting immediately after the serious damage became known.

Dirk Brandenburger, technical managing director of the Autobahn GmbH, explained that technical investigations are currently underway. „Es müssen dann erneute statische Berechnungen durchgeführt werden, um zu einer ingenieurtechnisch belastbaren Aussage zu kommen." The investigation is to clarify whether the structure can technically be rehabilitated or must remain permanently closed. „Kann das Bauwerk noch in irgendeiner Art und Weise mit technischen Möglichkeiten nochmal ertüchtigt werden oder kommen wir in eine Situation, wo das Bauwerk dauerhaft gesperrt bleiben muss?" He expects a reliable assessment within a few days. „Darüber möchte ich heute nicht spekulieren. In ein paar Tagen werde man möglicherweise Genaueres wissen."

The head of the federal Autobahn GmbH, Michael Güntner, also classified the bridge as a central project. „Es gebe für die Autobahn GmbH derzeit kein wichtigeres Projekt als die Bonner Nordbrücke." Güntner pledged: „Wir werden alles tun, hier die Probleme schnellstmöglich zu lösen."

Schnieder pointed out that the North Bridge is an important connection not only for motor vehicle traffic but also for cyclists and pedestrians. „Aber auch den Rad- und Fußverkehr wollen wir nicht unterschlagen, auch der ist wichtig." The ADFC Bonn/Rhein-Sieg is also demanding that the bridge be reopened at least for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the ADFC's assessment, the right-bank main bridge over the Rhine could continue to be used, as the damage is concentrated mainly on the left-bank approach bridge. The ADFC has called on the Autobahn GmbH to examine this possibility.

NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) warned against premature speculation. „Spekulationen über die Zukunft der Brücke würden sich derzeit verbieten. Es müsse jetzt abgewartet werden, in welchem Zustand sich das Bauwerk befinde." He also emphasized the state's political responsibility for a swift solution in coordination with the federal government and the Autobahn GmbH.

Schnieder also used the appointment to take a look at the nationwide bridge landscape. Many German motorway bridges were built at the same time and are no longer adequate for today's traffic loads, he said. Germany can be poorly compared with other countries on infrastructure projects, not least because of its role as a transit country. However, the country is "gut im Plan" with the renovation of thousands of bridges. The Bonn North Bridge is now the most prominent individual project with "absoluter Priorität".

Impact on Traffic in Bonn

Already on Friday morning, the Stadtwerke Bonn had reported unusually high traffic volumes on the bridge day. According to the city, traffic jams formed on the Kennedy Bridge, at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, in the area of the Stadthaus, and at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz on the Beuel side. Buses and trams were also affected and ran late. A municipal task force is consulting on measures to relieve commuter traffic, including additional P+R parking lots and increased frequency on buses and trams.

The City of Bonn has called on its own employees to work from home as much as possible and is appealing to other companies in the city and the region to do the same. The aim is to noticeably reduce traffic volumes in the coming days until it becomes clearer what will happen with the North Bridge.

Against the backdrop of the case, Schnieder referred to bridge renovation at the federal level as an ongoing task. The bridge has top priority for the federal government, he said on Phoenix television. „Es müsse alles getan werden, um die Befahrbarkeit wiederherzustellen." A precise damage assessment is currently being carried out. Only then can a decision be made on whether and by what means the North Bridge can be rehabilitated.

A Look at the Nationwide Bridge Situation

The bridge had been surprisingly closed on Wednesday after the Autobahn GmbH publicly announced new damage to the structure. The full closure applies until further notice. Until the closure, significantly more traffic had rolled across the structure than over the long-closed Rahmede Valley Bridge on the Sauerland line A45. Observers consider this to make the impact on regional traffic flow particularly severe.

Schnieder assured that the federal government would use all possible acceleration measures for the project. This includes close coordination with the City of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district, and the NRW Transport Ministry. The Autobahn GmbH and the city expect that an initial reliable engineering assessment of the bridge's condition will be available within a few days.

How long the closure will last remains unclear. Schnieder spoke only of the goal of making the bridge passable again "möglichst schnell," without naming a specific timeframe. The City of Bonn is simultaneously preparing for an extended period of significant traffic restrictions.

Next Steps and Timeline

From the perspective of the Federal Transport Ministry, the on-site appointment and the clear declarations of priority were also intended to send a signal to the region. The message: The North Bridge is a top-priority matter, financing will not be an obstacle, and all parties involved are working at full speed on a solution.

What is clear, however, is that as long as the structural calculations and further technical investigations are not completed, the bridge will remain closed in every respect. The ADFC, the city, the Autobahn GmbH, and the responsible ministries will therefore need to continue working closely together in the coming days to keep the consequences for traffic and the people in the region as low as possible.

Schnieder personally inspected the bridge on Friday to get his own picture of the situation. He was accompanied by representatives of the Autobahn GmbH as well as senior municipal officials from Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district.
