Bonn, 06 June 2026

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced during a visit to the closed Bonn North Bridge that restoring the usability of the A565 bridge is a top priority for the federal government and that all possible acceleration measures will be used.

The Bonn North Bridge is part of the A565 motorway and the most important east-west connection for the region. According to the minister, approximately 100,000 vehicles cross the structure daily; it was built in 1967. The sudden closure this week is causing massive traffic disruptions in the city and surrounding area.

On Wednesday, the federal Autobahn GmbH had announced that new damage had been detected on the bridge. Among other things, cracks in the concrete and corrosion damage to the reinforcing steel had been found. The cracks in the load-bearing structure of the left-bank approach bridge had grown larger, and additional damage to steel and concrete was discovered. The bridge was then immediately closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists.
