Brazil withdraws ambassador from Argentina – diplomatic crisis following Milei's attacks on Lula

In addition to his attacks on Lula, Milei also targeted Brazilian judge Alexander de Moraes, who is known beyond the country's borders. He insulted him as "bald garbage." Milei also called for turning one's back on the "socialist scum" in Latin America. The verbal attacks came amid a politically charged atmosphere: Judge de Moraes had previously prohibited Milei from meeting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro – who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for an attempted coup – during his visit to Brazil.

Brazil's sharp diplomatic response

Brazil reacted with unusual sharpness. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry stated: "There is no precedent in which a foreign head of state on Brazilian territory has made attacks and insults against the head of state, democratic institutions – including the judiciary – and the Brazilian people." According to reports, the government in Brasília interpreted Milei's statements as an "affront" and subsequently took diplomatic measures.

Argentine Ambassador Daniel Raimondi was summoned to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry to express Brazil's displeasure over the insults and to demand an explanation. At the same time, Brazil withdrew its own ambassador from Argentina for consultation. The recall of an ambassador and the summoning of a foreign ambassador are considered in international diplomacy as clear signals of displeasure or protest toward another government.

Election campaign context in Brazil

The background to the dispute is the election campaign in Brazil: Milei had traveled to Brazil to support the nomination of right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro as the PL candidate. Flávio Bolsonaro (45) is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for an attempted coup and is currently serving his sentence under house arrest due to health reasons. Milei is one of the most prominent representatives of the political right-wing camp in Latin America.

Observers assess the diplomatic break as the most severe crisis between the two South American neighbors in decades. Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America and Argentina's most important trading partner – the bilateral relations therefore carry considerable weight that goes beyond symbolic gestures.

Consequences for bilateral relations

The government in Brasília also made clear that it does not understand Milei's appearance as a private expression of opinion by a guest speaker, but rather as a targeted attack by a friendly head of state on Brazilian institutions. This raises the question of future cooperation in regional forums such as Mercosur or the G20.

It remains unclear how Argentina will respond to the recall. The Argentine government must now weigh whether to retract, relativize, or defend Milei's choice of words – and what consequences this could have for the already strained economic and trade relations. Within Brazil, the incident is also likely to further fuel the election campaign, as Milei is regarded as an international figurehead for large parts of the right-wing scene.
