Lula faces a potential 2026 challenger from Bolsonaro's political heir

Lula's camp has responded with undisguised contempt. With the headline "Duell mit Bolsonaros Sohn", the Workers' Party-leaning magazine CartaCapital captured the narrative the governing side now wants to project: a generational and ideological showdown rather than a routine contest. Allies have spent the past two years highlighting Flávio's legal exposure, including unresolved proceedings the prosecutors have filed against him, most prominently a case lodged before Brazil's Supreme Court. The party's digital operation has paired those references with imagery of the Bolsonaro family's rhetoric, in order to discourage centrist voters from viewing the opposition as merely a moderate continuation of the Bolsonarist era.

The 2026 calendar gives the rivalry an unusually long runway. Although the first round is still roughly a year away, Flávio has been touring the South and Centre-West, drawing large crowds that include former Bolsonaro voters, evangelical pastors and the farmers' caucus in Congress. That itinerary mirrors the formula that brought his father to the Planalto Palace in 2018, and is intended to reassure a rattled base that the Bolsonarist project is alive even though its founder is legally barred from running for office and effectively sidelined from the political frontline.

Within the PL, the conservative party that now houses most of the Bolsonaro family, Flávio is no longer the consensus figure he was during his father's 2022 re-election campaign. Senator Tarcísio de Freitas, the governor of São Paulo and a former Bolsonaro infrastructure minister, is also weighing a run, and the two camps are beginning to test each other. Pressure is being applied in private: elders close to Jair Bolsonaro have signalled a preference for Flávio, but are keeping the door open for a later alignment should Flávio's legal situation or his ability to unify the base weaken.

For Lula, the calculations are equally stark. His standing in early polling has slipped from the peaks of 2023, while economic anxieties over interest rates and the fiscal framework have eaten into the approval margin he once enjoyed. The president's inner circle has begun to argue that Flávio is the most beatable opposition option, because he carries the burden of both his own legal file and his father's baggage. The campaign rehearsals already under preparation in Brasília and São Paulo reflect that reading.

The shorthand used in Brasília and São Paulo to describe the emerging contest is blunt: a confrontation between two dynasties rather than between two arguments. To drive that point home, Lula's strategists are weighing a campaign that would tie Flávio directly to the 8 January 2023 storming of government buildings in Brasília, an episode that prosecutors have tied to senior Bolsonaro allies. Flávio's team, for its part, is testing a different register, painting Lula as the author of a fractured country and crediting the Bolsonaro family with the conservative renaissance that began in 2018.

Burnishing the contrast, Flávio has been emphasising his gubernatorial experience in Rio de Janeiro and his ability to translate social-media fluency into disciplined vote-getting. Lula's team has counter-emphasised that a Flávio candidacy would represent the continuation rather than the renewal of the Bolsonarist era, and that for the first time in nearly a decade, Brazil would face a binary choice between two clearly known alternatives rather than a fragmented field.
