Wingen-sur-Moder, July 5, 2026
Unknown individuals broke into the Lalique Museum in the Alsatian town of Wingen-sur-Moder during the night to Saturday and stole around twenty pieces of jewelry estimated to be worth approximately four million euros.
According to the AFP news agency, citing investigation sources, the perpetrator or perpetrators gained forced access to the museum at around 5:30 a.m. The museum announced online that it had fallen victim to a break-in and would remain closed for several days. The closure was intended to allow a reopening "in peace and in complete safety."
The intruders reportedly headed directly to the jewelry room and triggered an alarm system there. While a security service was assessing the situation, a cleaning worker arrived at the scene and alerted the gendarmerie, according to AFP. Police estimate the damage at "approximately four million" euros.
