Bremen Jobcenter: Managing Director Spinn Dismissed After Million-Euro Costs for Meeting Room

Bremen's Senator for Labor Claudia Schilling (SPD) expressed dismay at the scale of the cost development. At the center of the affair is a meeting room referred to as a creative room. The so-called "Kreativraum" with designer furniture cost around 906,000 euros. There is also an additional item: A further 293,000 euros went to a room for a project for women in the working world. Together, the expenses add up to well over one million euros.

The board of trustees had already voiced sharp criticism in advance. This was disproportionate, criticized the board of trustees, which according to its own statements had not been informed. The case also has a supra-regional dimension because the Bremen Jobcenter is an authority that works directly with the unemployed and those in need of assistance. In the view of the trustees, this makes it all the more serious that funds flowed into high-end office furnishings precisely there, while at the same time citizens' applications for basic benefits must be processed. The opposition in the Bremen State Parliament had repeatedly raised the issue of the costs in recent weeks; several parliamentary inquiries are expected to follow.

At the specialist level, the key question now is how the contract award could have come about in the first place. Since the board of trustees was not informed according to its own statements, the findings so far suggest that Spinn or parts of the management may have initiated the procurement on their own authority. The investigation is to clarify which offices approved the procurements at what amounts, which external service providers were involved, and whether the procurements complied with public administration regulations.
