The British Army stopped and placed under guard the roughly 244-meter-long oil tanker "Smyrtos" of the Russian shadow fleet in the English Channel on Sunday.

According to the British government, units of the Royal Navy, together with specially trained forces of the National Crime Agency (NCA), boarded the ship in the early morning hours. The entire operation lasted about six hours and, according to the British account, was carried out in close coordination with France. From the air and at sea, the operation was supported by, among others, the frigate HMS Sutherland.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had ordered the armed forces in the early morning to intercept the vessel. The action was "yet another blow against Russia" – in German: "noch ein weiterer Schlag gegen Russland" – and a warning to those financing "Putin's war in Ukraine" – Putins Krieg in der Ukraine – that they could not hide. The Ministry of Defence in London said the tanker had been seized "Trotz aller Bemühungen Russlands, Sanktionen zu umgehen und seinen barbarischen Krieg gegen die Ukraine zu schüren."
