British armed forces boarded and detained the sanctioned oil tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel on Sunday in a six-hour operation that officials described as the first UK-led interception of its kind.

Royal Marine commandos put boots on the deck of the Smyrtos as the vessel transited the English Channel overnight, according to the UK Defense Ministry. The tanker will be held and monitored off the south coast of England while investigators examine its movements and ownership.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the investigation on Sunday in a post on X, framing the operation as part of a broader effort to choke off the revenues that sustain Moscow's war in Ukraine. "This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide," Starmer wrote.
