The government in London has fully completed the takeover of the troubled steel company British Steel, thereby nationalizing the company.
As the British government announced on Thursday, the nationalization of the former Chinese-owner-led company British Steel is now fully complete. Previously, the state had already taken operational control of the company in April 2025 in order to prevent the closure of the plant in Scunthorpe in northern England. Now the formal and final step of nationalization has followed.
British Steel was originally privatized in 1988 under then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In recent years, however, the Scunthorpe plant came under increasing pressure: high energy costs and an oversupply of steel on the world market made life difficult for the company. The previous Chinese owner Jingye had ultimately no longer seen itself in a position to operate the site economically on a permanent basis.
