Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast completes his 100th year of life on July 12, 2026, and embodies a spirituality that seeks to overcome boundaries between religions and cultures.
From Viennese Student to Cloistered Monk
David Steindl-Rast, born in Vienna and educated at the University of Salzburg, is among the most influential spiritual voices of our time. At the age of 27 he entered the monastery, although he had originally dreamed of a large family with twelve children. Instead, he devoted his life to the great questions of existence – and found his answers in the Benedictine tradition.
Decisive for him was a sentence from the Rule of Saint Benedict, composed more than 1,500 years ago: one should keep death before one's eyes at all times. This radical mindfulness of the finitude of life, according to Steindl-Rast, sharpens the view for what truly matters – the present, the encounter with others, and the ability to be grateful.
