Magdeburg, 15 June 2026

Ahead of the state election in Saxony-Anhalt in September, the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has announced that it will abstain in the Magdeburg state parliament in the election of the Minister-President if no joint candidate is agreed upon.

Election goal: Ousting the CDU

Wagenknecht told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) that the BSW's election goal was to oust the CDU, also because this could end the government of Friedrich Merz. „Unser Wahlziel ist die Abwahl der CDU, auch weil das die Merz-Regierung beenden könnte“, the party founder said. If the other parties rejected the BSW's proposal, her party would neither vote for the incumbent CDU Minister-President nor for the AfD candidate, but would abstain.
