A political scientist sees a connection between substantively heterogeneous governing coalitions and the AfD's sustained rise in the upcoming state election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.

Heterogeneous Coalitions as a Risk

Ahead of the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, a political scientist has pointed to the risks posed by increasingly broad and thus heterogeneous coalition formations. The more diverse such alliances become, the harder it is for voters to recognize what a government stands for programmatically and who is responsible for its course, he said. This lack of clarity is an explanation for the rise of the AfD, which can position itself as an opposition party and in a certain sense claim an "opposition monopoly."
