AfD lead candidate for the Saxony-Anhalt state election, Ulrich Siegmund, has described his party's result as a mandate to govern and has not ruled out a new election.

AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund has interpreted his party's performance in the Saxony-Anhalt state election as a political mandate to take over government. „Natürlich ist es ein Regierungsauftrag", Siegmund said according to consistent media reports. The AfD emerged as the strongest or second-strongest force in the Saxony-Anhalt election and is now claiming the leadership of a government in the state.

With regard to possible majority configurations in the state parliament, Siegmund also stated that he would „selbstverständlich" form a government even if his party held only one seat more than the opposing side. This statement stands in contrast to a campaign announcement according to which the AfD only wanted to govern with a stable majority. Observers interpret the move as a signal to potential coalition partners and to the party's own ranks that it is prepared to take on responsibility at short notice.
