Budapest, 29 May 2026

Budapest police will not prohibit the Pride parade scheduled for June 27, the authorities confirmed on Friday, marking a departure from the restrictive policies of the previous government.

In a statement to the AFP news agency, police said that the application process for the 2026 parade and subsequent talks with organizers had revealed "no grounds for a ban on the assembly."

The organizers officially submitted their notification for the event on Wednesday, setting the date for June 27.

A Legacy of Restrictive Laws

The decision represents a stark contrast to the legal environment under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who for years restricted the rights of LGBTQ people under the pretext of "child protection."
