At the Gay Pride Parade in Istanbul on Sunday, Turkish police arrested at least 50 people, including a journalist, even though the organizers had intended to draw attention to the years-long suppression of the LGBTQ movement in Turkey.

According to reports, the parade took place despite a ban by the authorities and the sealing off of the central Taksim Square. Police erected iron fences around the square, which is popular for gatherings. Other squares, such as those in the Asian district of Kadiköy, were also closed off. On the Asian side of the city, demonstrators marched through the streets with whistles to draw attention to themselves.

According to eyewitnesses, the gathering was dispersed by Istanbul police officers in plainclothes. According to media reports, there were also arrests.
