Charges against Karácsony for Pride 2024 dropped

The Pride parade had been held in 2024 despite a ban imposed by the then-government under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The government had invoked an anti-LGBTQ law from 2021. According to the organizers, more than 200,000 people participated in the demonstration, significantly exceeding the number of participants in previous years. The parade took place under the green Mayor Karácsony, who is considered Orbán's political opponent.

In April 2025, the European Court of Justice ruled that Hungarian anti-LGBTQ laws violate the fundamental freedoms of the European Union. This decision now forms the legal basis for the charges against Karácsony not being pursued further. The public prosecutor's office in Budapest announced the dropping of the proceedings on Thursday.

The charges against Karácsony were filed in January 2025 in connection with the organization of the previous year's Pride parade. The background was the controversial interpretation of Hungarian assembly law in relation to EU law. In May 2025, Péter Magyar became the new Prime Minister, replacing Viktor Orbán, who had held the office for 16 years prior. Magyar is described as a conservative, pro-European politician who has repeatedly spoken out in favor of equality and freedom of assembly.

However, as of the time of publication, Magyar had neither actively supported the Pride parade nor initiated steps to repeal the anti-LGBTQ laws enacted under Orbán. The decision of the public prosecutor's office is seen by human rights organizations as a signal that Hungarian justice, at least in this specific case, prioritizes EU law over national restrictions. Karácsony himself expressed relief over the dropping of the proceedings and pointed to Budapest's long-standing commitment to an open civil society.

Legally, however, it remains open to what extent the European Court of Justice's ruling will have an effect beyond this individual case. It is currently unclear whether the Hungarian legislature will amend the underlying laws.
