Permits on the rise
The latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office show a continuation of the upward trend in building permits observed for several months. According to the agency, the number of approved apartments in May 2026 rose by 24.7 percent compared to the same month the previous year. In total, 21,000 apartments in new buildings and existing structures were approved. Of the 21,000 units, 17,800 were in new buildings and 3,200 were for measures in existing buildings.
The recovery is also continuing on an annual basis. In the period from January to May 2026, German building authorities approved 104,700 apartments, an increase of 15.4 percent compared to the same period the previous year. Permit figures are regarded in the construction industry as a leading indicator for actual building activity in the coming two to three years. The Federal Statistical Office sees this as an indication of how residential construction could develop in the medium term.
