Bundesbank President Nagel to Receive France's Highest Honour in Berlin

The Bundesbank stated that the award recognises Nagel's commitment to Franco-German cooperation. Before the formal presentation, Nagel is scheduled to give a speech at the ceremony together with the Honorary President of the Banque de France, François Villeroy de Galhau. According to the Bundesbank, the two central bankers will address the topic "Europe and Franco-German relations," a subject that has gained urgency amid debates over European economic sovereignty, monetary policy coordination and the future of the euro.

The Order of the Legion of Honour was founded on 19 May 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and is awarded to personalities who have rendered special service to France or to the ideals of the Republic, regardless of nationality or social standing. The decoration recognises outstanding civil and military merits in service of France and its values, and the institution has been conferred on heads of state, military leaders, artists, scientists and public servants across the centuries.

A Napoleonic Order With a Transnational Reach

Among the first Germans admitted to the Legion of Honour was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, reflecting the order's long tradition of honouring figures from across the Rhine whose work resonated in France. The order's history stretches from the Napoleonic era to the present day, and recipients have included politicians, diplomats and cultural figures whose contributions crossed national borders.

Nagel, who has led the Bundesbank since 2022, has positioned himself as a vocal advocate for stronger European integration on financial regulation and capital markets union. His tenure has coincided with a period of high inflation, a historic cycle of interest-rate increases and renewed debate about the international role of the euro, all issues in which French and German positions have had to be closely coordinated.

A Central Banker in the European Spotlight

The ceremony in Berlin comes at a moment of intensified dialogue between the two central banks, which jointly steer the second pillar of the European monetary system. Villeroy de Galhau, who sits on the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, and Nagel are both members of that Frankfurt-based rate-setting body, making their joint appearance in Berlin a symbolic moment for European policy coordination.
