Hambach, 29 May 2026
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will hold a laudatory speech this evening at Hambach Castle as former Polish Justice Minister Adam Bodnar receives the Hambach Freedom Prize 1832.
The ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the historic site in the Palatinate region, where tens of thousands gathered in 1832 to demand freedom, national unity, and civil rights during the Hambach Festival. The prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, is being awarded for the third time.
Bodnar is being recognized for his steadfast defense of judicial independence and democratic institutions. As Poland's Commissioner for Human Rights and later as Justice Minister, he became a leading voice against democratic backsliding in Europe.
