Berlin, 10 July 2026
The 630 members of the German Bundestag are forgoing a salary increase this year to which they are actually entitled by law.
On the last sitting day before the summer recess, the Bundestag decided to suspend the automatic adjustment of MPs' remuneration that was scheduled for 1 July. The bill was introduced by the CDU/CSU and SPD parliamentary groups and adopted with the votes of all groups. In this one-off step, Parliament is deviating from the mechanism it itself introduced in 2014.
Background: The 2014 mechanism
Under the Members of Parliament Act (Abgeordnetengesetz), salaries rise automatically on 1 July each year, in line with general wage developments. Last year, nominal wages in Germany rose by 4.2 percent. Had this been applied, MPs' monthly remuneration would have increased from 11,833 to 12,330 euros – a rise of almost 500 euros.
