Berlin, July 9, 2026

The Bundestag is passing the law on application-free child benefit on July 9, which is to enter into force on January 1, 2027 and be introduced in two stages.

Requirements for automatic payment

The German government wants to cut red tape with the reform and pay child benefit in the future without an explicit application. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil explained that around 300,000 child benefit applications per year could be eliminated through the reform of application-free child benefit. The government speaks of a "real service gain" for hundreds of thousands of parents.

Currently, parents in Germany receive 259 euros per child per month, regardless of income. The child benefit is to rise to 272 euros from 2028. According to the Federal Employment Agency, 17.5 million children and families received the benefit in 2025; the family benefit offices paid out a total of 55.32 billion euros.
