The German government coalition has agreed to further develop parental allowance, with the maximum entitlement remaining at 14 months.

Family Minister Karin Prien said the coalition had agreed on a good solution for parental allowance. The period during which the family benefit is paid is to be structurally developed further and adapted more closely to the realities of life for young families today.

With this, the coalition is planning a reform without increasing the maximum number of months for which parental allowance can be claimed. According to the ministry, the current maximum entitlement of 14 months will remain.

What is to change structurally

Prien emphasized that the planned further development should take account of the different living situations of young families. No specific design of the measures was mentioned in the available information.
