Hamburg, 12 June 2026

After a week-long military exercise at Hamburg Airport, five Luftwaffe Tornado fighter jets took off on Friday morning heading for their base in Jagel; a sixth jet remains on the ground for now due to a technical fault.

The Bundeswehr relocated the bulk of its aircraft from Fuhlsbüttel on Friday. As the Bundeswehr's Land Command announced, five Tornados from Tactical Air Force Wing 51 "Immelmann" returned to their home base in Jagel near Schleswig. Only one fighter aircraft still has to remain in Hamburg. "Bei einer Maschine habe es ein technisches Problem gegeben, teilte das Landeskommando der Bundeswehr mit."

The exercise, titled "Dispersed Operations 2026 – Panther Shield," aimed, according to the Luftwaffe, to strengthen cooperation between civilian facilities and the Bundeswehr. Around 100 soldiers were deployed. "Ziel war der Übungswoche es, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen zivilen Einrichtungen und der Bundeswehr zu stärken." Among other things, training covered how fighter jets take off and land at a civilian airport and how this can be integrated into normal operations.
