Possible tornado causes damage to up to 50 buildings in Glückstadt

Within the town limits, the wind buckled the flat roof of a hall in the industrial area on the street called "der Keil." On the street itself, there were disruptions according to police, and it was partially closed from 10 p.m. Debris flew through the air and additionally damaged surrounding buildings.

Damage also in the Pinneberg district

The severe weather also left its mark in the surrounding area. In Groß Offenseth-Aspern in the Pinneberg district, the wind lifted a container roughly 40 feet in size from its anchoring and thereby damaged three to four cars parked on the Dorfstraße, according to police. The municipality of Engelbrechtsche Wildnis was also among the affected places.

Parallel to the tornado, there was heavy rain in the region. On the A7 motorway near Bad Bramstedt in the Segeberg district, two accidents occurred almost simultaneously, according to police. Whether there was a direct connection to the severe weather was initially unclear.

The police pointed out that the damage assessment is preliminary. Only after more detailed inspections of the damaged buildings, including residential houses and halls, can the extent be finally quantified. There were no reports of injuries as of the morning.

Residents were asked to report damaged roofs and loose building components so that the fire department can secure them. The German Weather Service (DWD) was involved in evaluating the event according to information from the reports.

Overall, a picture emerged in the affected regions that is typical for a tornado in Central Europe: a comparatively narrow swath with partly severe damage, while adjacent areas were less affected.

The Itzehoe Police Directorate, which coordinated the operation, announced that it would continue the investigation into the exact course of events together with the DWD. Only then can it be definitively clarified whether it was indeed a tornado.
