The State Criminal Police Office of Upper Austria has issued a warning about a traveling burglary gang that marks apartment doors with barely visible adhesive threads in order to later break into houses and apartments unnoticed.
How the Perpetrators Operate
According to the investigators' findings so far, the perpetrators follow a recognizable pattern: thin adhesive threads are attached to apartment and house doors, which usually go unnoticed by residents. When a resident comes home and opens the door, the thread is loosened – if it remains intact, however, the perpetrators know that the apartment is presumably empty and can subsequently break in in a targeted manner.
According to the State Criminal Police Office, residential areas in Linz, Wels, Steyr, and in the Traun area are particularly affected. The perpetrators reportedly operate in a division of labor: while one member applies the markings, accomplices observe the residents' habits. The police assume that the gang operates across regional boundaries and has already been active for several weeks.
