In the more than ten-year-long proceedings concerning the Buwog affair, the defense of Karl-Heinz Grasser has suffered a definitive defeat against presiding judge Marion Hohenecker at the Vienna Criminal Regional Court.

Background of the Buwog Case

The long-awaited decision marks a provisional endpoint of a procedural battle that has accompanied the main trial against former Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser and several co-defendants since December 2017. At that time, Judge Hohenecker, as presiding judge, opened the taking of evidence; since then, the defense has repeatedly attempted to challenge her for alleged bias – so far without success. With the decision now issued, the attempt to push her out of the proceedings has definitively failed.
