The Chinese automaker BYD has significantly expanded discounts on plug-in hybrid vehicles in Germany in August, intensifying price competition with domestic manufacturers, according to an analysis by the Center Automotive Research (CAR).
At the same time, the average discounts on pure electric cars and on combustion engines declined slightly in August, the institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen, based in Bochum, announced. CAR study director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer spoke of a change in competitive behavior.
For plug-in hybrids — vehicles with a combustion engine and an additional electric drive — price reductions rose across various segments. BYD is among the brands that have noticeably increased their discounts. Established manufacturers in Germany such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi are coming under additional pressure as a result.
