The federal cabinet has agreed on a draft law that will in future prohibit the previously permitted accompanied drinking of 14-year-olds in public.

Under the draft, young people under the age of 16 should in future no longer be allowed to consume alcohol in public, even when accompanied by adults. Previously, a corresponding exception applied to 14-year-olds, who were allowed to drink beer or wine under supervision at family celebrations or in public places. The federal government now wants to abolish this exemption.

Background to the planned tightening

The cabinet paper states that the existing exemption weakens the protection of young people. The government justifies the step with reference to health risks and addiction prevention goals.
