British Columbia blaze drives evacuations near Malden

Across the border in Washington state, officials in the town of Rosalia reported a separate wildfire that forced evacuations in the surrounding agricultural area. Emergency crews, including personnel from local fire districts, responded alongside volunteers who helped move livestock and household belongings out of harm's way.

Further south, Utah firefighters worked to contain a large wildfire that authorities said was driven by gusty winds and prolonged drought. Incident commander John Goyke said crews were focusing on protecting structures and power infrastructure rather than achieving full containment in the near term.

Cross-border coordination between Canada and the United States

In the United States more broadly, federal and state agencies coordinated with Canadian counterparts to share firefighting personnel, aircraft and intelligence on fire behaviour. Anette Boulet, a regional emergency coordinator, said cross-border cooperation had been "seamless" because both countries rely on a long-standing mutual-aid pact for wildfire response.

Officials in Canada stressed that the federal assistance request approved on Sunday would cover the cost of hotel rooms, community-centre cots and other short-term lodging for people whose homes were either destroyed or placed under evacuation order. The funding flows through the provinces, which are responsible for identifying eligible evacuees and distributing support.

Air quality and public health concerns

The fires also raised renewed concerns about air quality across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. Smoke plumes from the blazes near Malden and Rosalia drifted into populated valleys, prompting health authorities to issue advisories for people with respiratory conditions to limit outdoor activity.

British Columbia's wildfire service said it expected cooler overnight temperatures to modestly ease fire behaviour in some zones, but warned that any lightning strikes over the coming days could ignite new blazes in already parched forest. Residents who had been ordered to evacuate were told to remain away from their properties until crews declared it safe to return.

Provincial preparation beyond British Columbia

Meanwhile, neighbouring provinces were preparing to receive evacuees if conditions in British Columbia deteriorated further. Reception centres in Alberta and Saskatchewan were placed on standby, with Canadian Red Cross volunteers pre-positioned to help register displaced families and provide meals.

The federal approval announced by Olszewski is the latest in a string of wildfire-related assistance measures Canadian authorities have activated this summer, underscoring how an unusually severe fire season has strained provincial emergency budgets and prompted a wider national response.
