Firefighters in southwestern France were working on Friday to extinguish the last hot spots of a massive wildfire that has burned through thousands of hectares near Bordeaux, as scientists warned that human-induced climate change is making such blazes far more likely across southern Europe.

Containment effort in Gironde

The blaze, one of the largest to hit the Gironde region in recent years, forced the evacuation of several communities and consumed vast stretches of pine forest in the Landes and Gironde departments. Fire crews, supported by water-bombing aircraft, had spent days battling walls of flame before weather conditions finally allowed them to begin containing the perimeter.
