Canada has chosen Germany's TKMS thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to build up to twelve new submarines for its navy, The Globe and Mail reported on the eve of the NATO summit.

According to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, Ottawa has selected the Kiel-based company to take over the submarine program that will replace the current fleet. The news, advanced by sources close to the process, marks a strategic shift in Canadian defense procurement policy, traditionally tied to North American and British suppliers.

The announcement coincides with the holding of the NATO summit, a framework that, according to German government sources cited by media in the country, could amplify the political reach of the contract. «Das wäre ein sehr guter Startpunkt für eine strategische Zusammenarbeit», declared a senior German official, who considered the decision «ein sehr gutes Signal», especially if communicated «im Kontext» of the Alliance meeting.
