German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius travelled to Canada this week to advocate for a multi-billion-euro submarine partnership, aiming to expand a German-Norwegian defence project to Ottawa.

The visit centres on a massive defence contract from German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), which has already secured Norway as a partner for its new Type 212 CD submarine. Germany and Norway have been hoping for months to bring Canada into the cooperation.

During his October 2025 visit to Canada, Pistorius stressed the long-term nature of the proposal. "It's not about someone buying something and then 'see and forget'," he said. "It's about much more: cooperation for decades."

Norwegian Defence Minister Tore Sandvik, who also attended, pushed for unified NATO standards. "Weapons must be compatible among partner countries, we must buy the same weapons systems," Sandvik said. Both nations are now waiting for a positive signal from Canada.
