According to a report by the newspaper "The Globe and Mail," Canada is planning to purchase twelve state-of-the-art Type 212 CD submarines from German naval shipbuilder TKMS, based in Kiel.

An order of unprecedented scale

According to TKMS chief executive Oliver Burkhard, the contract would be of an unprecedented scale. "Das ist ein großes strategisches Vorhaben," Burkhard said according to the report. He announced his intention to bring the contract to Germany together with a comprehensive industrial package. "Zusammen können wir die größte und modernste konventionelle U-Boot-Flotte der Welt bauen," he declared.

The decision by Ottawa was made over the weekend before the NATO summit, according to informed circles, as "The Globe and Mail" further reported. TKMS reportedly prevailed over South Korean company Hanwha Ocean in the bidding process. According to the report, the contract is to be publicly announced in the context of the summit meeting.
