A 21-year-old Croatian man came off the road with his car on Thursday evening on the Wörthersee southern shore road near Schiefling am See, broke through a fence and landed in the Wörthersee.
According to police, the man managed to rescue himself to shore and was only slightly injured. Emergency responders brought the slightly injured man to Villach hospital, as APA reported on Friday.
According to police, the 21-year-old was presumably driving too fast when he lost control of his vehicle. The car then broke through a fence and plunged into the Wörthersee.
Accident sequence on the Wörthersee southern shore road
The accident occurred on Thursday evening on the Wörthersee southern shore road near the locality of Auen in the municipality of Schiefling am Wörthersee, district of Klagenfurt-Land. The exact time was not given by police.
After the driver freed himself from the vehicle and swam to shore, the emergency services took over the recovery of the car. An alcohol test came back negative, as police further announced.
According to APA, a total of around 70 emergency personnel from the fire department and water rescue were involved in the operation. The fire department handled the recovery of the vehicle from the lake.
