Around two weeks after a cave accident in the central Laotian province of Xaysomboun, rescue teams have officially called off the search for the last two missing villagers.
On May 20, seven villagers descended into the extensive cave system to search for gold and bats. A sudden flash flood cut off their return route, trapping them inside the cave. Over the following days, five men were gradually rescued by emergency services, who continuously pumped water out of the cave system to get closer to the missing individuals.
Background of the accident
The two individuals who were last reported missing had ventured deeper into the cave system than the other five. Their rescue was particularly difficult from the outset, as the already narrow space was increasingly restricted by the continuous inflow of water. According to Thai rescuer Kengkad Bongkawong, the space in the cave had recently shrunk to just 30 centimeters due to the ongoing water ingress.
