Berlin, 29 July 2026

The CDU/CSU Bundestag faction elected former Chancellery Minister Thorsten Frei (CDU) as its new chairman on Wednesday during a special session in the Berlin Reichstag building, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) simultaneously carried out an extensive personnel reshuffle in government, the Chancellery and the party.

With the election of Frei, who has been a member of the Bundestag for many years and is closely tied to the Chancellor from years of working together, one of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's most important confidants is taking over the leadership of the largest faction in the German Bundestag. Frei served as Chancellery Minister over the past 14 months as the Chancellor's right hand, responsible for the conduct of government business. He is stepping into the faction leadership at a time when the black-red coalition of the Union and the SPD is under considerable internal pressure.
