Chelsea win under Alonso against Brighton – Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto score in seven-goal thriller

Brighton & Hove Albion, however, resisted defeat and kept the match alive over the full distance. Pascal Groß, who was among the most active players on the visiting side, was involved in several attacks and contributed significantly to Brighton's interim equaliser. It was only late in the match that Chelsea managed to score the decisive goals to make it 4-3 at full time.

Impact on the table

The match carries several implications for Chelsea's seasonal objectives. After the Fulham match on Sunday, this was the second appearance in the still-young season, and with the win against Brighton the Londoners have established early home strength. The success provides new manager Xabi Alonso, who took over in the summer, with a first sporting confirmation.

After two matchdays Chelsea sit in the upper third of the table with a maximum of six points. Brighton, by contrast, are still waiting for their first win of the season and are under pressure following the defeat in west London.

Outlook on the upcoming tasks

For the league, the result represents a continuation of the high-scoring start to the season. Already on the opening matchday several clubs had attracted attention with strong attacking performances, and the 4-3 between Chelsea and Brighton fits seamlessly into that trend.

In addition to the goalscorers, other players also came to the fore. Overall, the goals were spread across several players from both teams, underscoring the balance – or alternatively the vulnerability – of the defensive lines. For Brighton the takeaway is that the team can compete offensively but still need to tighten up defensively.

Looking ahead to the next matchday, the Blues travel from London to their next opponent. Brighton host another side from the upper half of the table the following weekend. After this high-scoring encounter, there is little recovery time for either side before the everyday grind of league football continues.
