China on Friday captured a booster stage of the rocket with a novel net system on a sea platform for the first time during the maiden flight of the Long March 10B, becoming the second nation after the USA to achieve a controlled recovery of an orbital rocket stage.

Technical premiere at sea

The state news agency Xinhua released video footage showing the falling booster being captured mid-air by a moving net at sea. The system represents a premiere: For the first time, China did not rely on a landing on solid ground or on a floating platform with supports, but on a net-and-cable concept on a ship.
