Separately, China has moved to tighten export controls on certain unmanned aerial vehicles, a category in which Chinese manufacturers have become global leaders. Analysts cited in Chinese state media said the certification change will raise compliance costs for exporters and delay shipments, since alternative Chinese inspectors must be re-engaged. U.S. industry groups warned that the move could disrupt supply chains for electronics, toys and machinery exported to China, where CCC marks are mandatory for many product categories. Several American firms had built businesses around providing on-the-ground inspection services to multinationals.

The State Administration for Market Regulation did not name specific U.S. companies in its announcement, but trade lawyers said the rule applies broadly to any American firm performing factory follow-up inspections for the CCC scheme. Companies will be notified through their Chinese clients, the regulator said.

Beijing has framed the measures as routine regulatory housekeeping rather than retaliation, but the sequencing has drawn skepticism in Washington. U.S. officials have argued that targeted administrative steps are a way for China to retaliate while keeping headline-level tariffs stable.

The action lands against the backdrop of broader U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports and earlier Chinese curbs on rare-earth processing. The drone curbs in particular are read in Washington as a response to American pressure on Chinese technology supply chains.

Observers note that Xinjiang, a region home to many members of the Uyghur Muslim minority, has been a recurring fault line in U.S.–China relations, with Washington imposing sanctions over rights concerns. Beijing denies those allegations and has used them to justify countersanctions of its own.
