China's economy grew by 5.3 percent in June, while industrial manufacturing in July was severely disrupted by three successive typhoons and mass evacuations in the eastern and southern provinces.
The economic data released by Beijing's statistics office on Sunday paint a divided picture. While the overall economy still posted growth of 5.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, the July figures point to significant strains in the manufacturing sector. Observers attribute the downturn in part to a series of unusually severe weather events that hit the country within just a few weeks.
