Beijing, August 31, 2026
China's official purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector rose slightly to 49.8 points in August 2026, signaling shrinking industrial output for the second consecutive month.
What the PMI Says
The state purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector increased by 0.6 points month-on-month to 49.8 in August. China's statistics office reported the data on Monday. Values below the 50-point mark are generally regarded as an indicator of contracting industrial activity.
Although sentiment in China's industrial sector has improved marginally, the sector continues to languish in so-called contraction territory. Back in July, the PMI had already stood at 49.2 points, indicating the first decline after a series of months above the growth threshold.
