China's unmanned Tianwen-2 probe has reached the near-Earth asteroid Kamo'oalewa after roughly 400 days of flight time, approaching it to within about 20 kilometers in order to begin scientific exploration.
Staged Approach
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced that the probe had successfully approached the celestial body to within 20 kilometers and begun its scientific exploration. According to CNSA, the probe has covered roughly one billion kilometers since launch. Tianwen-2 was launched from the Xichang spaceport at the end of May 2025.
On June 7, a maneuvering burn was executed at roughly 30,000 kilometers from the asteroid. Thereafter, the probe approached its target in several incremental stages. In June 2025, the probe had detected the asteroid for the first time.
